About the role

Director Of Agronomy/Head Golf Course Superintendent

Mid-Atlantic Region | Semi-Private Country Club

About the Opportunity

A well-established, financially sound semi-private country club in the Mid-Atlantic region is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and service-oriented Golf Course Superintendent to lead all golf course maintenance operations.

Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Superintendent serves as a key member of the Club's leadership team and is responsible for delivering exceptional golf course conditions while promoting a culture of professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and outstanding member service.

This position offers an outstanding opportunity for a proven Superintendent—or an exceptional Assistant Superintendent ready to advance—to join a progressive club that values long-term planning, financial stewardship, transparent communication, and collaborative leadership.

Position Summary

The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the planning, operation, maintenance, and continual improvement of the golf course, practice facilities, clubhouse grounds, landscaping, irrigation systems, equipment replacement planning, and environmental stewardship.

In addition to agronomic leadership, the Superintendent is expected to be a visible and engaged member of the Club's management team, working closely with the General Manager, leadership team, and fellow department heads to support the Club's overall mission and strategic objectives.

Primary Responsibilities

Agronomic & Golf Course Management

Develop and execute comprehensive agronomic programs. Maintain exceptional playing conditions for greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, practice facilities, and clubhouse grounds. Oversee irrigation management, water conservation, and environmental stewardship. Prepare the golf course for tournaments, member events, outings, and championships. Develop annual maintenance plans and seasonal work schedules. Monitor turf health and course conditions and proactively identify opportunities for improvement

Department Leadership

Recruit, train, mentor, and develop a high-performing maintenance team. Foster a positive, safe, and accountable workplace culture. Establish clear departmental goals and performance expectations. Promote teamwork, employee engagement, and continuous improvement. Lead by example through professionalism, integrity, and respect.

Financial Management

Prepare and manage annual operating and capital budgets. Control labor, equipment, chemical, fertilizer, irrigation, and operating expenses. Develop long-range equipment replacement and capital improvement plans. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency while maintaining high-quality conditions. Monitor departmental performance using measurable operational objectives and key performance indicators.

Strategic Planning

Participate in the Club's long-term planning initiatives. Prepare recommendations for infrastructure improvements, irrigation, drainage, bunker renovations, equipment replacement, and other capital projects. Present reports and recommendations to the General Manager and management team. Balance agronomic priorities with fiscal responsibility and member expectations.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Maintain required pesticide licenses, certifications, and departmental records. Administer OSHA and workplace safety programs. Oversee proper chemical storage, environmental compliance, and employee safety training. Promote proactive risk management and operational best practices.

Leadership Expectations

The successful candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and understand that today's Golf Course Superintendent is a senior department leader, not simply an agronomic expert.

The Club is seeking an individual who:

Builds strong working relationships with members, staff, committees and stakeholders. Communicates openly, honestly, and professionally. Works collaboratively with fellow department heads. Supports Club-wide initiatives and organizational goals. Welcomes member interaction and values transparency. Demonstrates humility and professionalism. Earns trust through consistency, responsiveness, and sound judgment.

Technical expertise is essential; however, the ability to lead people, communicate effectively, and contribute positively to the Club's culture is equally important.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates should possess:

A minimum of 3–5 years of successful experience as a Golf Course Superintendent, or Comparable experience as a First Assistant or Assistant Golf Course Superintendent demonstrating readiness for advancement.

Preferred qualifications include:

Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field. Current state pesticide applicator license or ability to obtain promptly. Strong knowledge of cool-season turf management. Experience with irrigation systems and water management. Budget preparation and financial management experience.
