THE OPPORTUNITY

Chambersburg Country Club is seeking an experienced, motivated, and team-oriented Golf Course Superintendent to lead the Club's Green & Grounds operation.

This is an opportunity for a hands-on golf course professional to take ownership of the agronomic management, daily conditioning, presentation, and long-term improvement of the Club's golf course and surrounding grounds.

The Superintendent will work closely with the General Manager, Head Golf Professional, Greens Committee, and Club leadership to establish and maintain high standards for course conditioning while managing the department's people, equipment, budget, irrigation system, and resources.

We are looking for a Superintendent who takes pride in the details, understands that exceptional course conditions begin with sound agronomic practices and good planning, and enjoys working in a private-club environment where the quality of the member experience matters.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Golf Course Superintendent will have responsibility for the day-to-day operation and long-term development of the Green & Grounds department .

The successful candidate will be expected to balance three priorities:

Course Quality — Deliver consistent, healthy, and well-presented playing conditions.

People & Leadership — Build, train, and lead a productive and professional maintenance team.

Financial & Operational Management — Manage labor, materials, equipment, contractors, and department expenditures responsibly while planning for future needs.

This position requires both strategic thinking and hands-on leadership . The Superintendent should be comfortable developing an annual agronomic plan while also being willing to step into daily operations when circumstances require it.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Golf Course & Agronomic Management

- Direct all golf course maintenance and conditioning operations.

- Establish agronomic programs for greens, tees, fairways, roughs, practice areas, bunkers, landscaped areas, and other maintained grounds.

- Develop and oversee fertility, irrigation, mowing, aerification, topdressing, cultivation, pest management, and other cultural practices.

- Monitor turf health, weather conditions, disease and insect pressure, soil conditions, and overall course performance.

- Establish daily and seasonal maintenance priorities.

- Maintain course conditions and presentation consistent with the standards of Chambersburg Country Club.

- Continually evaluate opportunities to improve turf health, playing conditions, efficiency, and long-term course sustainability.

Leadership & Team Development

- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and develop Green & Grounds employees.

- Establish clear daily expectations and work assignments.

- Create a positive, professional, and productive work environment.

- Develop employee skills in equipment operation, agronomic practices, safety, and maintenance procedures.

- Manage staffing levels and seasonal labor requirements.

- Hold employees accountable to established performance and safety standards.

Budget & Financial Management

- Develop the annual Green & Grounds operating budget in conjunction with the General Manager.

- Manage departmental expenditures within the approved budget.

- Monitor labor, fertilizer, chemicals, fuel, equipment, repairs, supplies, and contracted services.

- Evaluate purchases based on quality, value, necessity, and long-term cost.

- Maintain appropriate inventory and purchasing controls.

- Develop recommendations for equipment replacement and capital improvements.

- Assist with long-range financial and capital planning for the golf course.

Irrigation & Water Management

- Oversee the operation and maintenance of the golf course irrigation system.

- Monitor system performance and water usage.

- Coordinate irrigation repairs, maintenance, and system improvements.

- Develop long-term recommendations for irrigation infrastructure and water management.

- Promote responsible and efficient water use.

Equipment & Facilities

- Oversee the maintenance, repair, organization, and safe operation of the Club's golf course maintenance equipment.

- Establish preventive-maintenance procedures and schedules.

- Maintain equipment records and inventories.

- Evaluate equipment performance and make recommendations for replacement.

- Maintain the Green & Grounds maintenance facility, storage areas, chemical facilities, and related infrastructure in a safe and organized manner.

Safety & Regulatory Compliance

- Maintain a safe working environment for all Green & Grounds employees.

- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

- Maintain required pesticide licenses and certifications.

- Oversee the safe handling, storage, application, and documentation of pesticides, fertilizers, fuels, and other chemicals.

- Ensure employees receive appropriate safety and equipment training.

Club & Member Relations

The Superintendent is an important member of the Club's management team and will work collaboratively with other departments to provide an excellent member experience.

Responsibilities include:

- Working closely with the General Manager and Head Golf Professional.

- Coordinating maintenance activities around tournaments, outings, member play, and Club events.

- Working with the Greens Committee and providing regular updates regarding course conditions, projects, challenges, and future needs.

- Communicating professionally with members when appropriate.

- Responding professionally to questions or concerns regarding course maintenance.

- Providing recommendations and information to assist Club leadership with golf course decisions.

Capital Projects & Long-Term Planning

- Identify opportunities and needs for improvements to the golf course and Green & Grounds operation.

- Assist with long-range planning for irrigation, drainage, equipment, turf, bunkers, trees, cart paths, and other infrastructure.

- Develop project recommendations and cost estimates.

- Coordinate approved projects with contractors and vendors.

- Monitor outside work to ensure quality, timeliness, and adherence to approved scope.

Seasonal & Weather Operations

- Plan and coordinate seasonal maintenance programs.

- Prepare the course and grounds for extreme weather events.

- Coordinate storm cleanup and recovery.

- Oversee snow and ice removal for Club facilities and property as required.

- Respond to irrigation failures, equipment issues, storms, and other unexpected operational needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications

- Degree, certificate, or formal education in turfgrass management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field.

- Previous golf course superintendent or assistant superintendent experience.

- Experience managing a golf course maintenance team.

- Experience developing and managing an operating budget.

- Experience with irrigation systems and water management.

- Experience with golf course equipment maintenance and fleet management.

- Pennsylvania pesticide applicator certification, or the ability to obtain certification.

- Strong computer and organizational skills.

- Commitment to continuing education and professional development.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is a full-time, year-round position requiring a flexible schedule based on golf course conditions, weather, tournaments, Club events, and operational needs.

The position is primarily outdoors and requires the ability to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and storms.

Early morning, weekend, and holiday work will be required as necessary to meet the needs of the Club. The position involves regular physical activity, including walking, standing, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, and operating or working around golf course maintenance equipment.

The position also requires working safely around fertilizers, pesticides, fuels, machinery, and other materials associated with golf course maintenance.
