About the Role
The Equipment Manager reports directly to the Director of Agronomy and works closely with the Golf Course Superintendent to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all equipment utilized by the Golf Course and Agronomy Department.
The Equipment Manager is responsible for the leadership, coordination, training, and supervision of the equipment maintenance team and oversees all aspects of the maintenance, repair, service, and replacement of Hillwood Country Club’s golf course equipment, vehicles, utility vehicles, turf equipment, construction equipment, and related tools.
The ideal candidate will be a highly organized and technically skilled professional who takes pride in maintaining equipment to the highest standards. This position plays a critical role in supporting Hillwood’s commitment to exceptional playing conditions, operational efficiency, employee safety, and responsible stewardship of club resources.
Essential Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Agronomy and Golf Course Superintendent to develop efficient, productive, and well-organized daily and seasonal work schedules.
- Plan, schedule, document, and execute preventive maintenance programs for all club-owned and leased equipment, vehicles, tools, and related assets.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and operational issues and direct or perform necessary repairs.
- Supervise and coordinate the daily inspection, servicing, and safe operation of equipment.
- Schedule and coordinate warranty repairs and service with manufacturers, dealers, and outside vendors.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date service, repair, and maintenance records for all equipment.
- Develop, track, and manage equipment repair and maintenance budgets in coordination with the Director of Agronomy.
- Assist with annual budgeting and long-range capital planning for equipment acquisition and replacement.
- Assist the Director of Agronomy in developing and executing a comprehensive long-term equipment replacement plan.
- Lead, train, schedule, and supervise Equipment Technicians and other staff as assigned.
- Hire, train, and evaluate equipment maintenance staff in coordination with the Director of Agronomy.
- Establish appropriate staffing schedules to ensure adequate coverage of equipment maintenance responsibilities.
- Assist in training all Agronomy employees in the proper, safe, and efficient operation and care of equipment.
- Maintain accurate inventories of equipment, replacement parts, tools, lubricants, fuels, supplies, and other maintenance materials.
- Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with equipment manufacturers, dealers, parts suppliers, and service providers.
- Coordinate parts purchasing and maintain appropriate levels of critical replacement parts and supplies.
- Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and efficient equipment maintenance facility and work environment.
- Ensure equipment maintenance operations comply with all applicable safety standards and club policies.
- Participate in Agronomy management and staff meetings and effectively communicate equipment needs, maintenance schedules, priorities, and expectations.
- Pursue continuing education and professional development to remain current with advances in turf equipment technology, diagnostics, maintenance practices, and safety.
Support the Director of Agronomy and Golf Course Superintendent with special projects and other operational needs as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications
The successful candidate should possess, or demonstrate a willingness and ability to develop, the following:
- Comprehensive knowledge of the care, maintenance, repair, and operation of modern golf course turf equipment, heavy machinery, utility vehicles, and automotive equipment.
- Strong working knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, electric motors, fuel systems, and sprayer and pump systems.
- Knowledge and experience with reel and bedknife grinding, setup, adjustment, and cutting-unit maintenance.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Skilled in the use of a wide variety of repair and diagnostic tools and equipment, including welding and fabrication equipment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and maintenance schedules.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities, with a commitment to developing and training staff.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with the Director of Agronomy, Golf Course Superintendent, Agronomy staff, club leadership, vendors, and outside service providers.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining equipment to a high standard.
- A proactive approach to preventive maintenance and equipment reliability.
- A commitment to continuous personal and professional development.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team-oriented environment.
- Valid driver's license.
Experience & Education
- Minimum of 4 years of experience as an Equipment Technician or Assistant Equipment Manager, or 2 years of experience as an Equipment Manager.
- Experience in a golf course, sports turf, commercial landscaping, agricultural, or similar equipment maintenance environment preferred.
- Formal technical training in diesel technology, automotive technology, turf equipment, or a related field is preferred.
- CTEM designation and/or EMCP certification preferred.
- Additional manufacturer-specific training and certifications are highly valued.
