Course History and Layout
Kankakee Elks Country Club was built in 1927 by the noted Golden Age team of William B. Langford and Theodore Moreau. It is an 18-hole, par 72 course, with a length of 5,126 - 6,596 yards. The course is bent grass greens and Kentucky Bluegrass fairways. Practice Facility driving range, chipping green, and putting green.
Position Summary
The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the overall maintenance, care, and appearance of the golf course, clubhouse grounds, practice facilities, and surrounding landscapes. This role oversees daily operations of the grounds department and ensures the course is maintained at the highest possible standards.
This individual will work closely with ownership and club leadership to create exceptional playing conditions while maintaining budgets, equipment, and staff productivity.
Key Responsibilities
Golf Course Maintenance & Operations
Oversee all maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, irrigation systems, landscaping, and practice areas
Develop and execute agronomic plans for turf health and long-term course conditions
Monitor and maintain proper fertilization, pesticide applications, aerification schedules, and irrigation practices
Ensure excellent course setup including pin placements, tee markers, and daily presentation standards
Manage drainage improvements, erosion control, and seasonal turf projects
Oversee maintenance of clubhouse landscaping, entrances, parking areas, and additional property grounds.
Leadership & Staff Management
Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise grounds maintenance staff
Foster a positive team culture built on accountability, professionalism, and efficiency
Lead daily crew meetings and assign priorities based on course needs
Ensure proper safety training and compliance procedures are followed
Equipment & Facility Oversight
Coordinate with mechanics and vendors regarding equipment repairs and preventative maintenance
Maintain inventory of chemicals, fertilizers, irrigation supplies, and maintenance materials
Ensure proper storage and compliance of all chemicals and equipment
Budgeting & Administrative Responsibilities
Manage annual grounds budget and operating expenses
Maintain accurate records related to chemical applications, labor, irrigation usage, and equipment maintenance
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations

Qualifications
Minimum 3–5 years of golf course maintenance experience, with leadership or superintendent experience preferred
Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field preferred (not required with strong experience)
Valid Illinois pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain shortly after hire)
Strong knowledge of turf management, irrigation systems, and golf course equipment
Excellent communication and leadership skills
Ability to work flexible hours including early mornings, weekends, and holidays as needed
Pay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
