Assistant in Training/Summer Intern, Golf Course Maintenance

Pasatiempo Golf Club | Santa Cruz, California

About Pasatiempo

Pasatiempo is a semi-private golf club set in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, with views towards Monterey Bay.  Pasatiempo was founded by Marion Hollins and designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie.  Our agronomy team takes pride in presenting a course worthy of their legacy, and in developing the next generation of turf professionals.  The golf club draws players from around the world and is host to the Western Intercollegiate Championship, a nationally televised event held every April.

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Assistant in Training for a 12-month, hands-on learning position on our agronomy team. You will work alongside the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent to gain broad, practical experience in maintaining championship-caliber conditions on a heavily played course with varied terrain and microclimates. This role is designed for someone early in their career who wants to build the skills, knowledge, and professional network needed to advance toward an assistant or head superintendent position.

Key Responsibilities

- Learn and take part in daily maintenance operations, including mowing, rolling, irrigation, fertility, cultural practices, bunker care, and detail work

- Rotate through areas of the operation, including greens, irrigation, spray applications, equipment, and course setup, to build well-rounded experience

- Support turfgrass management programs for greens, tees, fairways, and roughs, including aeration, topdressing, overseeding, and disease, weed, and pest control

- Assist with irrigation monitoring, moisture management, and water conservation efforts, including hand watering and system repairs

- Assist with fertilizer and pesticide applications and record keeping, under the guidance of a licensed applicator

- Help with daily course setup, including pin placements and tee markers, and with tournament and event preparation

- Work around a high volume of daily play while learning to balance agronomic needs with the golfer experience

- Learn equipment operation, daily checks, and basic preventive maintenance

- Take part in budgeting, inventory, and purchasing discussions to understand the business side of the operation

- Assist the management team with special projects and other duties as assigned
