Assistant Mechanic

Position Title: Assistant Mechanic Reports to: Equipment Technician Supervises: No Supervisory Duties FLSA Status: Non-exempt Job Summary The Assistant Golf Course Equipment Mechanic supports the Equipment Mechanic in maintaining and repairing all golf course machinery to ensure safe and efficient operations. This role assists in preventative maintenance, diagnosing and addressing mechanical issues, and ensuring the proper upkeep of mowers, utility vehicles, and specialty turf equipment. The Assistant Mechanic also helps maintain service records, coordinates with vendors for parts and supplies, and aids in training staff on equipment use and safety procedures. Essential Duties include, but are not limited to: Trust & Teamwork: Assist the Course Maintenance team in ensuring equipment is in optimal condition, supporting seamless operationsMaintain open communication with supervisors and colleagues regarding equipment needs, repairs, and maintenance schedules by attending staff meetingsSupport and learn from the Equipment Mechanic while helping train team members in proper equipment handling and safety procedures Effective Communication: Clearly report any mechanical issues, safety concerns, or necessary repairs to the appropriate staffAssist in maintaining accurate and up-to-date repair and maintenance records by monitoring and tracking the usage and condition of the vehicle fleetProvide updates on equipment status and anticipated needs as requested by supervisorsWork with vendors to source parts and support cost-effective and timely repairs Innovation: Learn and apply best practices in equipment maintenance and repair to enhance efficiency and longevityStay informed on industry advancements and emerging technologies that could benefit the maintenance departmentAssist in following a routine preventive maintenance schedule to minimize equipment downtimeHelp prepare equipment for seasonal changes, including winterizing and summer servicingAssist in calibrating and adjusting mowing and application equipment (e.g. sprayers, spreaders) for accurate turf maintenanceSupport welding, fabrication, troubleshooting, and repairs on hydraulic and electrical systemsAssist in basic maintenance and repairs of irrigation pumps and related systems Balance & Appreciation: Promote a culture of respect by valuing each team member’s role in maintaining course conditionsRecognize and appreciate the contributions of colleagues in maintaining a high standard for course maintenancePrioritize safety and well-being, ensuring all protective measures and guidelines are followed to create a balanced work environmentEnsure compliance with environmental regulations for waste oils, fluids, and hazardous materials disposal Education and/or Experience Must be 18 years of age or olderGraduate of a vocational technical school or post-secondary training in small engine repair or mechanics, preferredOne to three years of experience as a mechanic, with golf course experience, preferred Job Knowledge, Core Competencies and Expectations Ability to assist in repairing and maintaining all golf course equipment efficientlyKnowledge of safety procedures and ability to perform the required role in emergency situationsLubricate and service all course maintenance equipmentInspect equipment for operating deficiencies and assist in performing necessary repairs and adjustmentsHelp maintain repair records and establish safety procedures for equipment useAssist in managing an inventory of commonly used maintenance and repair partsSupport general overhauls, preventative maintenance, and emergency repair workHelp sharpen and maintain the blades of reel mowers Physical Requirements Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditionsFrequently exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic, caustic chemicalsOccasionally exposed to extreme temperatures, wet/humid conditions, electrical risks, and loud noise levelsAbility to lift, bend, climb, stoop, pull, and perform repetitive motions frequentlyContinuous standing and walking throughout the work shiftMay need to use protective equipment such as respirators, gloves, earplugs, eye guards, boots and hats
