Job Description: Starter/Marshal (Private Golf Club)

Position Title: Starter/Marshal Department: Golf Operations Reports To: Head Golf Professional / Director of Golf

Position Summary

The Starter/Marshal is responsible for ensuring the smooth flow of play on the golf course while providing exceptional customer service to members and guests. This position serves as an ambassador of the club, maintaining pace of play, enforcing club policies and etiquette, and creating a positive golfing experience.

Key Responsibilities

Starter Duties

- Welcome members and guests at the first tee.

- Verify tee times and ensure groups begin play on schedule.

- Communicate local rules, course conditions, cart regulations, and club policies.

- Coordinate with the golf shop staff regarding player arrivals and tee sheet management.

- Assist players with any questions prior to starting their round.

Marshal Duties

- Monitor pace of play throughout the golf course.

- Politely address slow play issues and encourage groups to maintain proper pace.

- Enforce club rules, dress code standards, and golf etiquette.

- Assist members and guests with course information and directions.

- Respond to player concerns and communicate issues to golf operations management.

- Report course maintenance concerns, safety hazards, or incidents.

- Monitor golfer conduct to ensure an enjoyable experience for all players.

Customer Service

- Provide a friendly, professional, and welcoming presence on the course.

- Build positive relationships with members and guests.

- Assist with special events, tournaments, and club activities as needed.

- Promote a high standard of hospitality and member satisfaction.

Qualifications

- Knowledge of golf rules, etiquette, and pace-of-play standards preferred.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

- Professional appearance and demeanor.

- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

- Ability to operate a golf cart safely.

- Customer service experience preferred.

- Ability to remain calm, courteous, and tactful when addressing concerns.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to stand, walk, and drive a golf cart for extended periods.

- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.

- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and early mornings.
