About the Role
## Summary
The Police Cadet position is a non-sworn, paid training position in anticipation of being promoted to a Police Officer position. The Cadet is responsible for attending Police Academy and participating certain required work and training activities of the Police Department.
## Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Participate fully and successfully in a formal law enforcement training program through the academy selected by the City.
1. Attend all scheduled academy training sessions
2. Check emails and other correspondence from academy staff and instructors
3. Sit or stand for extended periods of time
4. Take appropriate notes on material presented
5. Prepare written reports
6. Prepare for written tests through independent or group study
7. Participate in a physical training program
8. Participate in field activities in various environmental conditions
9. Engage in formal inspections
10. Perform special duties as assigned
11. Pass all examinations, including written and skills-based assessments
- Demonstrate appropriate conduct at all time based on expectations
- Perform specialized assignments for the City's Police Department in areas including, but not limited to: community oriented related programs, Independence Day, National Night Out, and Trapper Days.
- Provides information and assistance to the public and promotes good public relations.
- Perform a minimum of 4 hours of community service per month.
- Perform a variety of duties relative to assigned area of responsibility or work special assignments at the direction of the Chief of Police or designee.
- Attend monthly meetings and officer training when available.
- Time off will not be granted during the law enforcement academy
- At the conclusion of the academy, earn Colorado P.O.S.T. Certification.
## Qualifications and Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written form.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, coworkers, supervisors, students, visitors and campus and center officials.
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 21 years of age before the completion of academy and the P.O.S.T. examination date.
- Valid Colorado Driver's License
- All of the requirements to earn Colorado P.O.S.T. certification, including but not limited to:
1. US Citizenship or certain non-United States Citizens as defined by Colorado P.O.S.T. Please note that the City will not sponsor candidates seeking eligibility to work in the United States.
2. Absence of any convictions for any felony and certain misdemeanors, as defined by Colorado P.O.S.T., including but not limited to 3^rd^ degree assault, resisting arrest, harassment and crimes related to controlled substances. The City will not consider applicants who are required to seek exemption from statutory certification restrictions.
- Disqualifiers:
1. Conviction of a felony or any crime involving domestic violence
- Use of any illegal drugs, except Marijuana, with the past 5 years
1. Conviction of any alcohol, controlled substances, drugs or other illegal substance related driving offense within the past 5 years
2. Arrest, conviction of, or deferred judgements for reckless driving within the past 5 years
3. Release or discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States under dishonorable conditions
4. Any history of Brady violations
5. Any factor which would prevent holding a POST certification or possessing a firearm
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual (English and Spanish)
- Previous law enforcement experience (non-sworn osition, volunteer, Explorer)
- Experience in the armed forces
- City Employee
- Higher education degree (beyond GED or diploma) -- Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, preferably in field related to criminal justice
- No use of marijuana within the past 5 years
