Located 80 miles from East Lansing and 40 miles from Detroit, Indianwood Golf and Country Club is a private, 36-hole golf club established in 1925 and the host of three USGA Championships. Assistants will learn the virtues of firm and fast golf conditioning while gaining confidence in management and building the pedigree crucial to career advancement in this industry.
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join our dynamic groundskeeping team. In this vital role, you will support the Golf Course Superintendent and Director of Agronomy in maintaining the highest standards of turf health, landscape aesthetics, and overall course playability. Your energetic approach and leadership skills will help ensure an exceptional golfing experience for members and guests alike. Duties:
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent (GCS) and Director of Agronomy. Under the GCS’s supervision, the Assistant GCS directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, bunkers, roughs and grounds. Other typical duties include:
• Assists with the management of staff and monitoring of course conditions.
• Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of golf course and club grounds; schedules work and supervises the employees and the use of equipment.
• Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of new fleet equipment
• Supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment
• Participates in the operation and maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
• Performs routine safety and operational inspections on all spraying equipment.
• Maintains chemical storage and mixing areas.
• Assistant GCS also performs other related work as required.
Skills
• Requires working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course greens, tees, fairways, bunkers and roughs; the seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; the planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation system, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.
• Requires ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment; to prepare clear and concise reports, and to maintain effective employee and public relations.
• Two seasons of experience in golf course maintenance.
• Candidates must possess positive attitudes, strong work ethics, good communication and organization skills, the ability to work within a team atmosphere and follow oral and written directions. The position requires a valid driver’s license and current state licensing as a pesticide applicator.
