About the Role
Summary The Assistant Golf Professional will act as the first point of contact with front‑line employees, members, guests, and students, ensuring the daily success of Portage Lake Golf Course and implementing an effective marketing plan. All duties are performed with a commitment to the highest level of customer service and total satisfaction of all customers.
Responsibilities and Essential Duties Directly supervise, schedule, and train outside‑services employees; use independent judgment to improve the customer experience when service gaps occur. Manage PLGC’s social media and marketing, communicating upcoming events, results, and promotions consistently. Ensure the success of Junior League and Junior Group Lessons. Assist in developing operating procedures and training manuals.
Oversee daily golf operations on a variable schedule, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends as needed; supervise operations in the absence of the Head Golf Professional and General Manager. Control, manage, measure, and report on the flow and pace of play; coordinate patron check‑in and fee collection with the starter. Provide excellent customer service to all customers.
Coordinate all golf leagues, including scheduling, scoring, communications, and celebrations. Conduct, schedule, and develop instructional programs using PGA tools and resources, maintaining teaching aids and equipment inventory in excellent condition. Assist with events, tournaments, and outings—planning, pre‑tournament contracts, post‑tournament billing, promotion, course setup, preparation, scoring, prize distribution, and follow‑up.
Coordinate USGA handicap system. Provide club repair, fitting services, and equipment sales. Assist with all merchandising duties, including sales, inventory, pricing, and displays. Maintain a credible, proficient golf game and represent the course professionally in competitive and non‑competitive settings. Assist in planning and budgeting for golf operations.
Support critical Auxiliary Business Services events and operational needs during the off‑season across auxiliary venues. Commit to learning continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work; actively engage in university continuous improvement initiatives. Apply safety‑related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures Associate’s Degree in Business or related field or equivalent experience. Member of the Professional Golfers Association, or willingness to enroll in the PGA Apprenticeship Program to demonstrate required competencies. Required Experience Demonstrated customer service experience. Demonstrated experience in event management.
Desirable Education and/or Experience Bachelor’s degree in Business, Golf Management, or related field. PGA Class A Professional. Experience utilizing Club Caddie, ForeUp, Jonas, Club Prophet, or similar golf enterprise software. Experience using lean practices and continuous improvement tools. Demonstrated experience in golf instruction and group clinics.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Established history of providing excellent customer service. Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. Commitment to workplace safety practices and willingness to learn applicable OSHA standards. Ability to work independently and take initiative to solve problems. Attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to professionally handle high‑stress situations and work effectively with frequent interruptions. Ability to teach and train others. Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups. Commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Working knowledge of USGA rules of golf and handicap administration. Knowledge of social media platforms and digital marketing strategies for customer engagement. Work Environment and Physical Demands The work environment is typically low to moderate noise. Employment Terms Full‑time equivalent: 1.0 FLSA status: Exempt Appointment term: 12 months Pay range: $42,000–$47,000 (negotiable based on experience and qualifications)
