About the Role
Description of Duties:
An employee in this class performs routine and responsible skilled work in the
maintenance and repair of small engine and specialized turf maintenance equipment
used in golf course grounds maintenance work. An employee works to repair and
maintain a variety of small engine power tools, tractors, riding mowers and other
specialized equipment used in turf maintenance. Decision making typically involves
determining if equipment or a part can be repaired or must be replaced. Ordering parts
and determining if a replacement part is applicable to the equipment is also a
component of work. Authority is exercised to determine the quality of repair and the
safety of repaired equipment for use. Potential of error exists in incorrectly determining
the soundness and safety of a piece of equipment and s1:1bsequent operation resulting
in personal injury or property damage to the golf course. Public contact primarily
consists of contact with vendors and other staff members. Work is performed under the
general supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent and is evaluated through
periodic checks.
Responsibilities
Maintains sound and safe operating condition of a variety of gas powered hand tools
and small engine equipment such as riding mowers through a schedule of preventive
maintenance. Repairs engines to include overhaul of ignition systems,
compression/combustion systems, drive system, exhaustion system, and hydraulic
system. Maintains clean work area and puts tools and parts in their place, opens and
unlocks shop to maintain the efficiency of the maintenance shop. Checks tires for flats
and fixes or replaces as needed. Checks for hydraulic fluid leaks and repairs hydraulic
system on tractors. Sharpens reel blades, bed knives, and rotary blades. Changes oil,
oil filters, and greases equipment. Welds any broken parts on equipment or anything
else around the shop. Installs lights on equipment.
Troubleshoots wiring and electrical systems for shorts in circuitry and switches.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Mechanical skill to repair equipment and troubleshoot problems with equipment service.
Considerable knowledge of standard hand tools, mechanic's tools, operation of light
equipment, and materials used in assigned work. Considerable knowledge of the
occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.
Ability to work cooperatively as a team member, work productively without close
supervision, and respond courteously to citizens. Ability to understand technical service
manuals, write instructions and orders for parts.
Physical Requirements
Work in this class is described as moderately strenuous and frequently requires
physical exertion to complete tasks. This employee must have the visual acuity to
determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned. Working
conditions include inside and outside environmental conditions. Employee is subject to
hazards, including mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions due to exposure
to fumes, odors, and dust.
Minimum Qualifications
Some experience with maintenance and repair of specialized small engine, power tools,
and turf cutting equipment supplemented by vocational and technical training.
Completion of high school or equivalent to high school such as GED.
Special Requirements
North Carolina Class C Driver License.
