About the position
The Lead Assistant Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for assisting the Superintendent with day-to-day planning, staff management, and execution of tasks to ensure maximum quality of golf course conditioning and member satisfaction. This position requires a peak season work week of 50+ hours while settling back to 40 hours during the winter months.
Responsibilities
• Conduct daily course task planning with Superintendent
• Assist with day-to-day management of staff
• Manage golf grounds crew when Superintendent is absent
• Communicate clearly with superintendent and pro shop staff
• Effectively lead golf course projects
• Work closely with the superintendent and staff on water management, including hand watering, irrigation setup, monitoring pumps, etc.
• Perform daily mowing practices
• Assist with developing and implementing team training programs
• Ensure staff safety at all times
• Effectively monitor turf conditions across the entire golf course
• Oversee application of fertilizers and plant protectants to all golf course surfaces
• Assist with in-house construction work projects
• Irrigation Repair and troubleshooting
Requirements
• Associate or bachelor's degree in turfgrass management, agronomy, or a related field preferred
• Minimum of 2-4 years of golf course maintenance experience, including supervisory responsibility
• Strong working knowledge of turfgrass species, equipment operation, and maintenance practices
• State pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain within required timeframe )
• Valid driver's license
• Proven leadership and team-building abilities
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
• Problem-solving mindset and attention to detail
• Comfortable working long hours, early mornings, weekends, and holidays
• Outdoor work in varying weather conditions
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, and equipment operation
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
