QualificationsExperience: Three years of increasingly responsible and skilled full‑time golf course maintenance work, including care and maintenance of greens.Education/Experience Substitution: Up to two years of college‑level coursework in agronomy, horticulture, plant and soil science, or turf management may substitute for experience on a 1‑year for 1‑year basis. No substitution allowed for one year of required grounds maintenance work.Additional Substitution: Up to one year of vocational or technical school coursework in landscape or turf management or horticulture may substitute for one year of experience, on a 1‑year for 1‑year basis. No substitution allowed for one year of required golf course grounds maintenance work.Alternative Qualifications:Graduation with a bachelor’s degree in agronomy, horticulture, or a related field.Graduation with an associate’s degree in plant science, horticulture, or a related field plus one year of increasingly responsible golf course grounds maintenance experience (including care of greens).Completion of a certificate in landscape and turf grass management and two years of increasingly responsible golf course maintenance experience.Special qualifications: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required for employment in some positions.Transcript required for proper evaluation of this job class.Examination method: Education and experience, 100%, for preferred service positions.ResponsibilitiesCleans up chemical or fertilizer spills immediately and informs supervisor.Stores, handles, and applies chemicals and fertilizers safely.Interviews and hires staff as vacancies occur.Calibrates spreaders and sprayers before use.Monitors pump stations and ensures accurate operation.Applies plant protective chemicals and fertilizers according to laws and regulations.Leads in mixing and spraying herbicides and fungicides.Applies plant protective chemicals and fertilizers to course grounds.Leads aerification, topdressing, and fertilization of greens and tees.Operates greens mowers, fairway mowers, tee mowers, chemical sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, topdressing machines, aerification devices, skid steer loaders, backhoes, and light trucks.Plants turf grass seed and/or sod when necessary.Assists in maintenance of native areas, spraying, mowing, creation, and seasonal burning.Uses centralized computer irrigation system to irrigate the golf course.Addresses performance issues with employees.Diagnoses and resolves issues such as weather conditions, crew limitations, and disease pressure.Supervises and critiques employees to improve performance.Assists in special projects such as greens renovation, tee construction, irrigation, drainage, design installation, bunker renovation, and others.Performs administrative duties including timekeeping, scheduling, and fuel records.Repairs leaks or damaged irrigation pipe, fittings, or wires.Renovates or adds irrigation piping, heads, or wiring.Directs mowing of fairways, greens, tees, roughs, and other grounds tasks such as cup replacement and bunker raking.Cares for established turf grass by mulching, aerifying, weeding, removing thatch, trimming, or edging flower beds, walks, and walls.Assists construction, repair, and painting of golf course buildings or accessories.Trains employees on new assignments and conducts interim reviews and performance evaluations.Monitors soil moisture to determine correct irrigation.Schedules daily work or special events such as tournament preparation.Assists environmental projects and implementation of new projects.Maintains records of all chemical and fertilizer applications.Maintains simple records and makes routine reports of time and materials.Assists recording wildlife activity with journals and photographs.Promotes
