Job Title: Golf Course Superintendent
Location: Private Member Golf Club
Reports To: President/Vice President
Position Overview
The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for delivering exceptional playing conditions and visual excellence befitting a private club environment. This role leads all agronomic operations while balancing course conditioning, fiscal responsibility, environmental stewardship, and a high-touch member experience. The Superintendent works closely with club leadership to uphold the traditions, standards, and long-term vision of the club.
Primary Responsibilities
Course Conditioning & Agronomy
• Maintain championship-quality conditions for greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, and practice facilities
• Develop and execute short- and long-term agronomic plans aligned with the club’s expectations and calendar
• Adjust maintenance practices based on weather, member play, and seasonal priorities
• Prepare the golf course for member events, tournaments, and special functions
• Protect the playability, consistency, and aesthetics of the course at all times
Staff Leadership & Culture
• Recruit, train, mentor, and retain a professional grounds maintenance team
• Foster a culture of accountability, pride, safety, and attention to detail
• Schedule labor efficiently to support peak play periods and special events
• Lead by example with professionalism and respect in a private club setting
Member Relations & Communication
• Proactively communicate course conditions, projects, and agronomic practices to management and members
• Respond professionally to member feedback and inquiries
• Work collaboratively with the Golf Professional staff to coordinate daily operations and course setup
• Represent the club positively with discretion and diplomacy at all times
Budgeting & Capital Planning
• Prepare and manage the annual operating and capital budgets
• Monitor expenses and control costs while maintaining elite standards
• Plan and recommend long-term capital improvements and infrastructure upgrades
• Maintain accurate records and reporting for ownership or board review
Irrigation, Equipment & Infrastructure
• Oversee irrigation system performance, water usage, and conservation practices
• Manage maintenance, repair, and replacement of all equipment and facilities
• Coordinate outside contractors, consultants, and suppliers as needed
Environmental Stewardship & Compliance
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and safety standards
• Manage chemical applications responsibly and maintain all required licenses
• Implement sustainable practices consistent with private club values and expectations
Qualifications & Experience
• Degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field (preferred)
• Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a Golf Course Superintendent or Assistant at a private club
• Valid pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain)
• Strong knowledge of turfgrass science, irrigation systems, and course conditioning
• Proven leadership skills with a service-oriented mindset
• Ability to communicate clearly with management, staff, and members
Physical & Scheduling Requirements
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and operate maintenance equipment
• Flexible schedule including early mornings, weekends, and holidays
