About the Role
GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
Kevin & Carolyn Scheck Criterion Golf Complex
Macon, Georgia
A Unique New-Construction Opportunity
The Kevin & Carolyn Scheck Mercer University Golf Complex is seeking a talented, motivated and hands-on Golf Course Superintendent to join this exciting new Nathan Crace (ASGCA) project from its inception.
The Superintendent will be hired during the construction phase to oversee golf course construction and grow-in and will remain as the facility’s full-time Golf Course Superintendent following completion and opening.
The new complex will feature a par-3 golf course and an extensive short-game practice area, with a strong emphasis on exceptional playing surfaces, grounds and overall presentation.
The Golf Complex is an independently operated facility and is not owned or operated by Mercer University.
Responsibilities:
During construction and grow-in, the Superintendent will:
- Work closely with ownership, golf course architect Nathan Crace, ASGCA, the golf course contractor and other project consultants throughout construction and grow-in.
- Provide agronomic input regarding greens, tees, short-game areas, soils, drainage, irrigation and grassing.
- Oversee turfgrass establishment and development of grow-in programs.
- Assist with irrigation installation, evaluation and commissioning.
- Develop initial fertility, plant-protection, cultivation and water-management programs.
- Assist in selecting and purchasing the initial golf course maintenance equipment fleet.
- Develop the initial maintenance operating budget and establish maintenance procedures.
- Recruit, hire and train the golf course maintenance staff.
- Prepare the golf course and practice facilities for opening.
Following opening, the Superintendent will assume full responsibility for the agronomic management, maintenance and daily presentation of the facility, including:
- Maintaining greens and short-game surfaces to consistently high standards of playability, firmness, smoothness and appearance.
- Managing mowing, course setup, topdressing, aerification and other cultural practices.
- Developing and implementing fertility, pesticide and plant-growth-regulator programs.
- Managing irrigation, soil moisture and water-use efficiency.
- Supervising and developing the golf course maintenance staff.
- Managing the maintenance operating budget, equipment and inventories.
- Maintaining appropriate regulatory and application records.
- Communicating regularly with ownership and management regarding course conditions, staffing, budgets and long-term needs.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a degree or certificate in turfgrass management, agronomy, horticulture or a related field, although equivalent professional experience will be considered.
Previous experience as a Golf Course Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent or in another golf course maintenance leadership position is preferred. Golf course construction and/or grow-in experience is highly desirable.
Candidates should possess strong knowledge of putting-green management, warm-season turfgrass management, irrigation and water management, fertility and plant-protection programs, maintenance equipment and personnel management.
The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain all required Georgia pesticide applicator licensing.
The Ideal Candidate:
This is a hands-on leadership position ideally suited for someone who takes personal pride in exceptional golf course conditioning and enjoys being directly involved in the daily maintenance operation.
The combination of a par-3 course and extensive short-game facilities provides the opportunity to focus intensely on quality, detail and exceptional playing surfaces.
Most importantly, this position offers the successful candidate the uncommon opportunity to help build a new golf facility from the ground up and then become the Superintendent responsible for its long-term success.
Compensation & Application:
Compensation and benefits will be competitive and commensurate with the successful candidate’s education, experience and qualifications.
Qualified candidates should submit a resume, cover letter, professional references, salary requirements and available starting date.
