## Assistant Coach Position
Charles County Public Schools is seeking Assistant Coaches to support our education-based athletics program. This is a 12-month temporary position offering a stipend with non-exempt status.
## Role Overview
As an Assistant Coach, you'll work directly with Head Coaches to develop effective coaching program plans that emphasize skill development, practice planning, and supervision across all levels of your sport. Your focus will be on fostering individual and team growth while instilling the highest ideals of character. You'll maintain open, professional communication with Head Coaches, student-athletes, parents, and school administration.
## What You'll Be Responsible For
Your day-to-day work includes being thoroughly knowledgeable of the Charles County Public Schools Extra
- Curricular Handbook and enforcing all athletics policies. You'll assist the head coach during pre-season meetings and report directly to them throughout the season.
You're expected to set an example of good moral and physical behavior at all times. This means arriving to practice thirty minutes early on non-school days, securing the building before and after each practice and session, and helping maintain the coach's office. You'll be responsible for teaching fundamentals, promoting sportsmanship, and informing players of their responsibilities while enforcing all school, county, and state rules.
Equipment management is a significant part of the role. You'll collect and check in all equipment after practices and games, maintain an inventory list, track missing equipment and the students responsible, ensure proper storage, and identify equipment needing repair for the athletic director. You're also responsible for collecting payment from players for lost equipment and turning it in appropriately.
Supervision is critical—you'll supervise every minute of every practice and activity, assuming full responsibility for the conduct and well-being of all players and students on trips. When delegating duties to student managers, you retain responsibility for their actions. You'll regularly check for damaged property and equipment, reporting damage immediately to the proper authority.
You'll ensure all players meet eligibility requirements set by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association and Charles County Board of Education. You must provide the athletic director and principal with all required MPSSAA and Charles County Public Schools certifications. Additionally, you'll attend all varsity games to assist the head coach or scout for varsity competition.
Administrative duties include assisting with lists of players who qualify for letter awards, tracking special honors received by team members, attending coaches' meetings and clinics, completing school records documentation including new records set each season, and helping the head coach prepare budget requests for the next season with items listed by priority.
## Required Qualifications
You must be either a teacher or certificated professional educator employed by the local Board of Education, or be certifiable as a professional educator by the State Department of Education according to 13A.12.01.
If you're a credentialed coach, you must meet specific requirements: eligibility to hold a Maryland certificate under COMAR 13A.12.01, possession of MPSSAA/MSDE Coaching Certification, and completion of two years of successful coaching as an emergency coach. Additionally, you must have spent the previous one year as a successful emergency coach at the school of hire in the position of hire.
## Physical and Environmental Requirements
This position requires ordinary ambulatory skills to visit other locations, with the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch. You'll need to manipulate light to medium weights between 10-50 pounds regularly. Good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity are essential, including the ability to grasp and use keyboard equipment. You'll frequently sit, reach with hands and arms, and must have the ability to talk and hear effectively.
