About the Role
Duties
Reports directly to the Golf Course Manager. As the Superintendent of the golf course, the incumbent is responsible for the presentation and maintenance of the golf course grounds to include greens, tees, fairways, roughs, sand traps, bunkers, irrigation system, plant beds, and grooming around buildings.
Supervises golf course maintenance personnel who must have a basic knowledge of power cutting fairways, roughs and greens, fertilizing, seeding, spraying for all types of insects, fungi and diseases, and watering. Maintains continuous personal observation of and provides training and advice to subordinates in the performance of their duties, as well as continual inspection of entire course to insure assigned task have been performed properly. Recommends leave periods, performance ratings, and disciplinary actions for golf maintenance staff.
Inspects the entire course daily to insure that immediate action is taken to prevent damage to grass from diseases, lack of water or too much water, or lack of fertilizer or too much fertilizer.
Produces comprehensive and detailed five-year plans, yearly plans, seasonal plans, monthly plans, weekly plans and daily planning overall programs for tees, green, fairways, sand traps, and roughs, down to the daily detailed routine. Provides a yearly budget to the Golf Course Manager for labor, material, repair, capital expenditure and minor project cost projections.
Advises the Head, Recreation Branch, the Golf Course Pro/Manager, Chairman of the Golf Course Committee, and the Chairman of the greens as to when the course should be closed or the playing limited due to conditions caused by adverse weather.
Acts as Duty Expert on grounds maintenance issues for other MCCS areas. Works closely with the Athletics Manager on seasonal maintenance of playing fields. Responsible for aeration, seeding, and fertilizing the following other MCCS activity areas in the Spring and Fall as needed: Butler Stadium Field, Barnett Field, Freeney Field, Field of Dreams, Clubs of Quantico, Crossroads Inn, Marine Corps Exchange.
Coordinate with Athletics Department on best dates to provide treatment to fields. Order all materials needed. Provide data to Athletics Department on costs of materials. Assign and supervise Golf Course staff to complete these projects.
Properly charge staff hours in People Soft to correct program, properly charge materials to correct cost center when ordering supplies.
Insures that the conservation policies of the Command are carried out.
Requests and consults with Base Maintenance, Base Natural Resources, and Public Works within a timely basis to accomplish tasks that are beyond the capability of the golf maintenance section.
Attends special conferences on golf course maintenance, including treatment of turf diseased, use of fertilizer, new equipment, etc. Will be trained and certified within 2 years of employment and recertified every 3 years in the application of pesticides in accordance with DODI and Marine Corps Order.

Qualifications
Four years specialized experience that has equipped the incumbent with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.
OR
A Bachelor’s Degree plus two full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education in Agronomy, Landscaping, or related field.
Must be skilled as a agriculturalists, a supervisor and a manager. Must be familiar with agronomy must also have a knowledge of plant nutrition, plant pathology, entomology, weed control, and an understanding of plant life in general. Must have skills as a mechanic, landscaper, and in record keeping. Must have knowledge of designing and construction of any part of the golf course. Must completely know and play the game of golf.
An equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the qualification above.
