About the role
Halbert National is seeking a motivated turfgrass student for a summer internship on its golf course maintenance team. Designed by architect Tom Fazio, the championship course is home to the Abilene Christian Intercollegiate (ACI), presented on the Golf Channel in October. This internship offers hands-on experience at a private facility and an opportunity to learn how an agronomy team plans and delivers high-quality playing conditions.
The intern will assist with daily course preparation, including mowing, hand watering, bunker preparation, and detail work. You will participate in the care of greens, tees, fairways, rough, and native areas, gaining exposure to cultivation, topdressing, irrigation, and plant-health programs. Under staff supervision, you will learn to operate and maintain equipment safely, communicate effectively with the crew, and build practical teamwork and leadership skills.
The property features TifEagle bermudagrass putting greens, Stadium zoysia tees and fairways, Zeon zoysia rough, and native grass areas. Interns will learn how weather, turf performance, tournament preparation, and property priorities influence maintenance decisions. You will also have opportunities to learn irrigation system operation, troubleshooting, water management, and the use of field measurements to inform agronomic decisions. Landscape, drainage, native grassland, and construction projects may be part of the experience, depending on timing and course needs.
This position runs from May through September, with start and end dates adjustable around the school calendar. The schedule rotates, with every other weekend off; holiday work is required. Compensation is $20–$22 per hour depending on experience, with overtime opportunities. Housing assistance is available, and uniforms are provided.
To apply, send a résumé and brief introduction to Gerad Nelson, Director of Agronomy, at gerad.nelson@halbertassoc.com. Questions may be directed to 972-415-7310.
