Position Summary The Golf Course Superintendent provides expert leadership and agronomic direction for Brigantine Golf Links, which is currently undergoing a transformational, multi-million-dollar redevelopment. The City of Brigantine is investing tens of millions of dollars in major course and facility improvements, including all-new cart paths, a state-of-the-art 18-hole irrigation system (with 9 holes completed and 9 scheduled for completion by early 2026), and the construction of a new country club designed to host major regional and national tournaments.
These significant investments will culminate in the re-launch of Brigantine Golf Links as one of the premier public golf destinations on the East Coast, with a milestone 100th anniversary celebration in 2027.
The Golf Course Superintendent will play a critical leadership role in this transformationoverseeing all turfgrass management, irrigation, environmental stewardship, and course conditioning to ensure championship-level playing standards. This individual will lead the agronomy team through redevelopment, implementing best practices in sustainability, infrastructure improvements, and long-range course planning.
Reporting to the General Manager and City Manager, the Superintendent manages all aspects of golf course maintenance including staff supervision, budgeting, equipment management, regulatory compliance, and coordination with contractors during construction phases. The Superintendent ensures Brigantine Golf Links is maintained to the highest standards of quality, safety, and environmental responsibility, supporting the Citys vision of reestablishing the course as a must-play coastal golf experience.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement annual maintenance plans, including agronomic schedules, turf health programs, and long-range improvements. Direct daily course maintenance activities including mowing, fertilization, irrigation, aeration, pest management, and landscape care. Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate all golf course maintenance staff; foster a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork. Manage irrigation systems, including operation, scheduling, troubleshooting, and repair to ensure efficient water use. Maintain, repair, and inventory all maintenance equipment; coordinate with mechanics and vendors to maximize equipment performance and longevity. Monitor course conditions and adjust maintenance practices to meet weather, seasonal, and play requirements. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations regarding pesticide and fertilizer applications, water usage, and worker safety. Collaborate with the General Manager/Director of Golf to schedule maintenance around play and events, minimizing disruption to guests. Prepare and manage annual maintenance budgets; monitor expenditures and recommend cost-saving measures. Establish and enforce standards of course conditioning, including greens speed, bunker quality, and overall playability. Oversee tree management, drainage projects, and capital improvements related to golf course infrastructure. Implement sustainable practices to reduce environmental impact, including integrated pest management, water conservation, and habitat protection. Maintain accurate records of chemical applications, equipment usage, and staff training. Present monthly maintenance updates and long-term improvement recommendations to the General Manager/Director of Golf.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Extensive knowledge of turfgrass management, agronomy, irrigation systems, and golf course maintenance practices. Strong leadership skills with the ability to train, motivate, and manage a diverse maintenance team. Familiarity with pesticide and fertilizer application methods, calibration, and recordkeeping. Mechanical knowledge for troubleshooting and maintaining turf equipment. Ability to develop and manage budgets, control costs, and prioritize capital needs. Excellent problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with management, staff, contractors, and golfers. Commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable golf course management practices.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelors degree in turfgrass management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in golf course maintenance, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory role. Current New Jersey pesticide applicator license, or the ability to obtain one within six months of hire. Knowledge of modern irrigation systems, turf equipment, and maintenance technologies. Valid New Jersey drivers license required.
