About the Role

Summary: To assist with the management of the golf course, practice area and clubhouse facility in order to maintain the highest standards of excellence for play and scenic pleasure.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assume all responsibilities of the golf course superintendent in his/her absence
• Supervision of staff
• Monitoring of daily maintenance operations
• Organize and delegate daily work schedules as well as projected work
• Direct the activities of the crew; participate in disciplinary procedures as outlined in the company handbook and make recommendations to the superintendent for termination.
• Conduct interviews with prospective employees and make recommendations for new hires
• Assist the superintendent in preparing the operation budget and analyzing the expense forecast to ensure that expenditures are maintained within budgetary guidelines.
• Maintain security of golf course property and buildings
• Update superintendent daily on all aspects of the maintenance department projects, personnel issues, equipment problems and other concerns requiring attention
• Make recommendations to the superintendent on vehicle and equipment repairs
• Assist in the establishment of training programs to effectively produce a top quality product while maintaining good, harmonious working relationships; training must include equipment operation, safety and environmental upkeep
• Diagnose and solve technical golf course maintenance problems in cooperation with the superintendent
• Train maintenance employee in irrigation processes
• Maintain course character and marking in conformance with the Rules of Golf, as directed by the superintendent
• Other duties assigned by Superintendent or Regional Manager
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities under the direction of the Superintendent and in accordance with applicable laws. Responsibilities include directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience:
Minimum of an associate degree in turfgrass management/golf course management or related field is required. One-year experience in golf course maintenance operation required. Knowledge of irrigation, fertilizer application, and chemical related applications. Continuing education classes related to golf course maintenance preferred. Extensive knowledge of operation of turf equipment required.
Language Skills:
Must be able to read and write the English language; bilingual a plus. Must be able to read and understand documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to top management.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts to properly mix chemicals as directed.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
• Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive a standard transmission.
• Current pesticide license required.
Other Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of turf grass management practices.
• Understand basic plant nutrition; plant pathology; entomology; weed control and pesticide laws.
• Ability to operate all types of mowing equipment, sprayers, and other equipment used in maintaining the golf course.
• Knowledge of current federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including such areas as employment, safety, and environmental standards.
• Computer skills preferred.
• Good management, communication and judgment for decision-making required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and vibration. Must be able to work in temperatures exceeding 90 degrees in the summer and below 20 degrees in the winter.
