GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITIONUnder basic supervision, is responsible promoting the game of golf and assisting Golf Pro with managing and overseeing all elements of municipal golf course operations and supervision of staff. Assists in assuring employees of this division are properly training and following policy, procedures and regulations. Incumbent provides and conducts golf instructions and lessons.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWork is performed under the basic supervision of the Golf Processional.
SUPERVISION EXERCISEDAssists Golf Pro in supervising staff assigned to golf and bar and restaurant operations; May supervise community service workers, ADC Inmates, part-time or temporary employees as required and assigned. May act as Golf Pro in his/her absence.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation and experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Associate’s Degree in Business Administration, Recreation Management or related field degree preferred, and;Two (2) or more years experience in golf course management, retail merchandising and providing golf instruction/coaching.Certification as a Class A member of Professional Golf Association (PGA) and/or PGA Certified Professional Golf Teacher, Golf Coach or Golf Instructor desirable.Highly skilled in playing the game of golf so the nuances of the course are conveyed to maintenance practices and overall playability of the course to increase customer satisfaction.Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work. Assists Golf Pro with golf course operations to include bar and restaurant activities, as directed.Greets guests, and provides prompt, courteous and friendly customer services; explains rules, policies, and procedures. Assures customer service issues are property address and resolved.Assists pro shop staff with point of sale operations; reservations, starting, monitoring, and pace of play.Assists Golf Pro with pro shop and bar and restaurant merchandising, purchasing, pricing, display and inventory control and record management; provides recommendations for new merchandise and products and assists with budgeting.Assists customers with technical equipment purchases and repairs. Arranges pro shop activities, demonstrations, displays, and events.Maintain an attractive and orderly appearance in and around golf pro shop and bar and restaurant.Accurately reconciles cash register sales with daily sales reports; prepares accounting reports for receipts and deposits as directed. Track and verify all players, greens and cart fees, and other charges necessary.Enforces golf rules and City regulations, and polices the course to regulate play and the conduct of players; develops and manages innovative tournaments and other special programs.Maintains playing ability and works to stay competent in all areas of the game.Assists Golf Pro in actively marketing and promoting municipal golf course; stays current on modern trends and developing programs to grow golf course revenue.Develop player development programs. Conduct group and individual golf lessons and clinics; provides professional instruction to golfers on proper form, technique and selection of appropriate equipment; plans and manages player participation programs; provides technical advice on the rules of golf.Participates in recruitment and selection of division employees. Assist Golf Pro in maintaining harmonious staff relations; promotes a positive work environment and enforces policies and procedures as needed.Assists Golf Pro in overseeing golf course operations staff through hiring, training, scheduling, and review of performance, disciplinary actions and termination.Assist Golf Pro in managing golf cart fleet while ensuring proper maintenance. Ensures proper storage, safety, and cleaning of golf equipment.Assists in ensuring safety of participants and facility users. Recognizes safety issues and seeks assistance through appropriate personnel to review and rectify the issue.Maintains positive professional and effective working relationships by providing exceptional customer service.Assists Golf Pro in monitoring DOC Inmate Labor program, ensuring personnel is appropriately trained to supervise and lead DOC Inmate Labor.Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.Frequently requires non-standard work hours; flexible work schedule availability required.May be required to work early mornings, evenings, nights, holidays or weekends as needed.Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures; follows safety policies and practices, works in a safe manner, and reports unsafe activity and conditions. PERIPHERAL DUTIESServes on various employee or other committees as assigned.Provides back-up assistance to staff due to absences or as needed.Performs related duties as required.Performs special assignments as requested. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge: Considerable knowledge of fundamentals of the game of golf, golf course and bar/restaurant operations; Rules, regulations, player responsibilities, sportsmanship, etiquette and traditions of the game of golf; Golf instruction techniques; Techniques and terminology for sports competition and tournaments; principles, methods and procedure of facilitating a golf pro shop and assisting in the overall golf course operations; Effective marketing of programs and events; Cash handling procedures and internal control processes; Basic knowledge of mathematics; Recordkeeping and reporting practices, data collection and filing systems; Effective oral and written communication methods. Safety issues associated with care of patrons, visitors, event participants, staff and general public; Sports merchandising, sports fashion trends and golf equipment trends. Effective task delegation; Supervision, motivation and development of employees; Work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned area of work; City and department procedures, policies and guidelines; Federal and State safety rules and regulations, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) laws, regulations and standards; Injury prevention, and proper procedures to follow after an employee injury/accident; Personal computers and software (word processing, spreadsheets, project and scheduling, and other departmental software and database uses, etc.).
Skills: Demonstrated skill in playing golf; dealing tactfully and courteously with customers and conflict management, providing effective and friendly customer service; Instructing all phases of the game of golf to others;Preparing and maintaining clear, concise and accurate records and reports; Interpreting and enforcing rules and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; Supervising staff, delegating tasks and authority, and coaching to improve staff performance; Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands; Establishing and maintaining positive professional and effective relationships; Communicating effectively verbally and in writing; Playing the game of golf, and instructing/coaching all phases of the game to others; Monitoring operations and verifying golf course facilities are properly and safely maintained.
Abilities: Develop, coordinate, and facilitate varied golf bar and restaurant activities Order, facilitate retail store and bar/restaurant operations and maintain appropriate inventory; Plan, coordinate, train and supervise work activities and assist in the establishment of uniform rules, practices and procedures; Guide, direct and motivate employees; Interact with the employees and public in a highly positive and informative manner; Interpret and apply a variety of policies and procedures consistently; Perform basic mathematical computations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSValid Arizona Driver’s License or ability to obtain one.May be required to obtain and maintain current Alcohol Manager and Food Services Manager certifications.
