About the Role
Hawthorns Golf & Country Club is seeking a motivated, dependable, and hands-on professional to join our team as an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. The Assistant Superintendent will work closely with the Golf Course Superintendent in the daily management, presentation, and long-term improvement of the golf course and surrounding club grounds. This position is a key leadership role within the maintenance department and is ideal for a turf professional who wants to build the technical, agronomic, and staff-management experience necessary to advance in the golf course management industry. Hawthorns Golf & Country Club is a private club in Fishers, Indiana, featuring bentgrass greens, tees, and fairways. Maintaining bentgrass throughout the golf course requires careful attention to water management, disease prevention, cultural practices, fertility, traffic management, and daily turf conditions. The Assistant Superintendent will play an active role in these decisions and in delivering a consistently high-quality experience for members and guests. Position Responsibilities The Assistant Superintendent will assist with and participate in all aspects of golf course and grounds maintenance, including: • Assist the Superintendent with daily planning, crew assignments, scheduling, and quality control. • Lead, train, and work alongside the golf course maintenance staff to ensure efficient, safe, and consistent daily operations. • Monitor bentgrass greens, tees, and fairways for moisture stress, disease pressure, insect activity, weed pressure, traffic wear, and other turf-performance concerns. • Assist with daily irrigation management, including irrigation scheduling, hand watering, moisture monitoring, syringing, troubleshooting, and field repairs. • Identify and communicate course irregularities, including dry areas, wet areas, irrigation issues, disease activity, equipment concerns, mowing patterns, drainage problems, and other conditions affecting playability or presentation. • Coordinate and participate in mowing, rolling, course setup, bunker maintenance, topdressing, aerification, verticutting, seeding, sod work, and other cultural practices. • Assist with the calibration, mixing, application, and recordkeeping of fertilizers, pesticides, wetting agents, soil amendments, and other turf-management products. • Maintain accurate records related to pesticide and fertilizer applications, irrigation, labor, inventory, equipment needs, and maintenance activities. • Assist with irrigation-system operation and repairs, including heads, valves, controllers, wiring, leaks, and routine troubleshooting. • Help maintain an organized chemical-storage area, maintenance facility, inventory system, and safe work environment. • Assist with special projects involving drainage, landscaping, tree work, bunker improvements, irrigation upgrades, and other golf course enhancements. • Prepare the golf course for member events, tournaments, outings, and daily play. • Communicate maintenance priorities effectively with the Superintendent, golf operations staff, and maintenance team.
Qualifications • Two- or four-year degree in turfgrass management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field is preferred. • Relevant golf course maintenance experience will be considered in place of, or alongside, formal education. • Experience maintaining bentgrass turf is strongly preferred. • Experience with golf course irrigation operation, troubleshooting, and repair is preferred. • Knowledge of fertilizer and pesticide applications, equipment calibration, and application-record requirements. • Indiana pesticide applicator license preferred, or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment. • Ability to lead by example, train staff, and maintain high expectations for safety, efficiency, and workmanship. • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. • A professional, positive, and team-oriented attitude. • Valid driver’s license required. • Willingness to work early mornings, weekends, holidays, and additional hours as weather, course conditions, and club events require. • Ability to perform physical outdoor work in changing weather conditions and lift up to 50 pounds.
